First and foremost, Hillary, Dan and myself want to thank all of you that attended the 2012 King Cobra Karate Open and 2011 Professional Karate Commission Region IV Awards banquet held at the newly renovated Avalon Hotel Erie, PA. This year's event was a smashing success with many people to thank. Friday night Master Joe Ruvelo and Darla Medal coordinated the evening tournament and International Team Fights with razor sharp precision. We were able to have two International Teams fights in one evening and still be done at 10:45pm.
The team fights began at 7 PM with the United Kingdom and Canada fighting first. The USA team received the Bye. UK team coach Eddie Malinowski won the flip and decided to send out first. Blake Paterson, coach of the Canadian team, matched the first fight and then the fights were on. With exciting display of good competition and comradely the UK team ended as the victor and faced the USA team for the final and the gold. Team UK was looking very focus and organized and with a fourteen person roster including all ages and belt colors the final match up was looking good. The scores stayed very close until the 3rd to the last fight when the US team fell behind by 7 points. At that time I thought it was all over until the next fight when Julie Vincent from Master Gaffar Adam's GAKA fought. Julie beat her opponent 5 zip and gave the US team hope. Next was the last fight and with a 2 point deficit Mike McIntire, another student of GAKA, fought a good veteran fighter from the UK in Keith Allen. They went at it hard and Mike was able to get a two point lead over his opponent and tied the score, creating a sudden death tie breaker with no time limit. Both fighters had the entire fate of their teams on their shoulders and the match began. They took off with a flurry of good techniques and the match stopped as the judges scored the point to the US team winning the International Team fight for 2012. It was such a close decision, however the majority of the two US, two Canadian and one UK judge called the point for team USA to decide the winner. This was one of most exciting International team fights I have ever witnessed and now can't wait do to this again next year.
Saturday's competition, which was a triple point PKC tournament for International and Regions 2, 3 and four was masterminded by Dale McCutcheon who ran it so smooth that we finished in record time. The floor supervisor Dennis Madura gave his coordinators with ample help to keep the rings running.
The awards had everybody gleaming as they were delighted to see the beautiful glass engraved awards with an elegant caring case. Gord and Melody Latimeer of Norkim Dist, of Canada exclusively designed our awards.
I want to also give special recognition to our coordinators that worked hard; Ed Troutman, Pete Davies, John Bender, Andy Ward, Angelo Marzales, Bill Adams, and Frank Caliguri who were part of the team effort to make this tournament run well.
The awards banquet was a wonderful buffet spread with roast beef and chicken and many sides to choose from. The hotel chef is a maestro.
After the meal we presented the awards and enjoyed the speeches we all heard from all. Our special awards, Competitor of the Year 2011 were announced and pleasantly surprised our winners with the special award they received. The winners will be posted on our website shortly. Our last award, and the first year it has been ever given, was the Professional Karate Commission Region IV Man of the Year, which went to Grant Miller. Unfortunately, Grant was injured fighting earlier in the day with a bruised rib and could not make the banquet. Accepting for him was his school partner Mark Dzikiy. Grant is the person that best deserves this award for his untiring efforts to make PKC4 work for you.
Our next PKC 4 tournament is the Rock Solid Challenge at Slippery Rock University Morrow Fieldhouse, Slippery Rock, PA Saturday February 18, 2012 This is a PKC4 tournament with 100% PKC4 rules. I just wanted to clarify this because last year this tournament had NBL rules and a PKC4 sanction. Floyd Kish and Del Rounds are the promoters for this event and the tournament will run very efficiently and organized. Get your pre registrations in now! For online registration go to www.rocksolidchallenge.com or info call 724 654 3325 or online info@rocksolidchallenge.com
Then our next area PKC tournament is in Poland Ohio. Dave Buker of American Karate in Boardman, OH is sponsoring the March Madness Karate Championships. Dave has promoted this event for many years and it is known for how well it is run and how fair the judging is. I enjoy helping the coordination of this event. Actually, I taught Hillary how to coordinate a tournament at this tournament when she was 10 years old. For more information call 330 757 0902.
Remember, Region 3 and region 4 have a point coop which enables competitors from both regions to receive their region's points at these other region tournaments. Competitors that compete in and out of region IV are also looked at for candidates as Competitor of the Quarter.
Finally, if you enjoyed your stay in Erie at the Avalon Hotel, please fill out and submit a questionnaire about your experience at www.tripadvisor.com. This will help the hotel's reputation as it strives to improve by upgrading its rooms and other facilities.

Master Curtis Smith'ss Ultimate Force Karate Championships was a complete success at the University of Pitt'ss Trees Hall. Beautiful large trophies were awarded to all the amazed champions who also had the opportunity to stand on the podium and have their picture taken recording another set of champions in the history books of Master Smith'ss event. The event started on time and finished in record time thanks to the help of Master Joe Bruno, Master Hillary Weston and Sensei Mark Dziky who worked as tournament floor coordinators.

October is a beautiful time of the year to travel. With the leaves changing colors it paints a colorful scenery. I observed this as I traveled to and from the King of the Ring Karate Championships last weekend in Akron, Ohio. Master Lee Harris hosted a very nice event. Beautiful trophies made the competitors proud to win. The tournament ran smooth at the direction of Master Dale McCutcheon and the floor coordination of Darla Medal and myself. We have worked together for many years and we already know what each other are thinking. At the close of the fighting events the Male and Female Black Belt Grand Champions were established and won by Hillary Barton Weston and James Decore. A very special thanks to Master Lee Harris for hosting an awesome tournament.

This year is going by fast and we are at the end of the third quarter and the PKC4 Competitor of the Quarter is now posted. Those who participated in the PKC4 and other PKC tournaments were chosen based on their participation.
We have one more Quarter left before we pick our 2011 Competitor of the Year at our Awards banquet January 28, 2012. You could be that person.
Master Mickey Forte'ss Mon Valley Open Karate Championships was a huge success as a new mixture of competitors were present and gave the competitors a chance to compete against new opponents. Master Forte and Master Bruce Smith ran the event very efficiently and the competitors were very happy with the beautiful trophies awarded. Many high-ranking Masters were present from Pennsylvania and Ohio and had their schools represent their skills. PKC4 welcomes back Master's Forte and Smith and look forward to next year's event.
Next on the road for National, PKC3 and PKC4 points is The King of the Ring Saturday October 8, 2011 at 10 AM. The event is being held at the University Park YMCA 477 E. Market St Akron, OH 44304. The American Karate Academy and Master Lee Harris sponsor this event. For more information call 330388 8076 or 330 869 9523. You will not want to miss this fantastic event. Master Harris provides a very well run tournament with beautiful awards and prize money for Adult Black Belt fighters.

The Professional Karate Commission's International Karate Championships and Awards Banquet was a huge success this last weekend and probably the best run International Championship I've ever experienced. Thanks to the awesome coordination skills of Master's Eddie Bethea, Donnie Michael and Tom Ward who kept the momentum flowing. On Saturday this enabled the competitors to have plenty of time to get ready for the International Champions awards banquet that followed that evening. The banquet had a presence that you only see few times in a lifetime and that included so many famous and highly respected Pioneers, Hanshi's and Masters who were on hand and to name some were Glenn Keeney, Phillip Koeppel, Joe Corley, Dr David Jordan, Herb Johnson, John Venson, Donnie Michaels, Eddie Bethea, Tom Ward, Woodrow Fairbanks, John Parrish, and many more. Two great men in the PKC shared this Years Man of the Decade Award. This prestigious Honor was awarded to Kyoshi's John Venson from Chicago, IL and Eddie Bethea from Kokomo, IN. These men have dedicated their lives to all aspects of Martial Arts and tournament competition. Congratulations for your well deserved award.

Summer is almost over and now the serious martial artist is ready to get in their training and working off that extra ear of corn. The good part is that we do train hard and use the mental and physical connection to make it through. We always want to exceed our limits. This enables one to advance on a regular schedule and at the same time enjoy the skills they have achieved.
Competition has continued into the summer with three tournaments in our area. All three were run very well and the camaraderie was awesome. Thanks to Masters LaVoice, Stergi and Roberts for providing the excellent venues. All three had awesome awards and competitors went berserk over them. What a great opportunity to sharpen up your competition and place in higher honors.

The 2011/2012 National season started off with back-to-back double point
tournaments. The Lions Den Karate and Grappling Championships and the
Summer Breeze Karate Championships. Master Bill LaVoice hosts the Lions
Den event and this year the tournament went off with a great day of
competition for all. The four foot first place trophies dazzled the
competitors and were beautifully crafted to take home and be proud to
own. Master Dave Buker, Master Frank Caliguri and Master Grant Miller
did a fantastic job running the tournament like a fine-tuned machine.
Unfortunately, I was on vacation in Myrtle Beach and could not attend.
I am sorry I missed this event, as everyone I spoke to that had attended
was extremely happy.
The GTA Summer Breeze Karate Championship, hosted by Master Al Stergi last weekend, ran smooth and fast. The trophies were beautiful with acrylic construction that gave it a lot of class. The T-shirts printed by Brian Stergi were absolutely brilliant and very colorful. The competition was awesome in all divisions. Master Dale McCutcheon ran the microphone as Darla Medal and myself ran the floor keeping the competition moving along and made an early trip home for all.
Next up on the tournament trail is the 18th Ultimate Challenge Karate Championships held in Euclid, OH on Saturday August 6, 2011. This double National and Regional tournament is good for both Region 3 and Region 4. This tournament will have top-notch competitors from all over making the competition crisp and sharp. Remember Region 3 & 4 receive regional points for their own region when competing in different Regions. For more information contact Master Jerry Roberts 440-742-0293.
Everyone by now has been notified or discovered online their National Champion status. For those of you that have made that goal and are officially PKC International Champions it has been a long hard road to the top and your loyalty, dedication and perseverance has paid off. My most humble and sincere congratulations are in order to each and every one of you. I know how it is. Have been there for a long time and understand the trial and tribulations of karate tournament competition. But now you do too because you did it and welcome to the history books because your accomplishment is forever. I am looking forward to shaking your hand at the 2010-2011 PKC International Karate Championships and Awards Banquet held at the Indianapolis Marriott East Convention Center, 7202 East 21 Street Indianapolis, IN 46219, 317-352-1231. Call now before rooms are gone at the special Karate rate. This prestigious event will take place September 2,3, and 4, 2011. This Triple point National and Regional tournament brings all the PKC together for a dynamite competition. Many Martial Art dignitaries will be on hand so bring your cameras. The banquet will honor each International Champion with their picture and award (plaque and patch) which will be displayed on the PKC online website and will remain in the archives forever. Cannot wait to see everyone there. For registration and more info call Grand Master Glenn Keeney at 501-262-2632.

What a wonderful experience The Battle in Fort Rapids Open Karate Championships
was this last weekend in Columbus, OH. The competition was top shelf
and the tournament coordination led by Master Dale McCutcheon keep the
momentum flowing. The water park was very impressive and fun for the
pre-registered competitors. The free admission and the $35.00 pre-registration
fee was a fantastic deal especially since this all took place under
one roof including hotel accommodations @ $69.00 per night. My team
and I enjoyed our Battle experience in Fort Rapids.

It's getting down to the wire for National point chasers being that
the National circuit ends July 2, 2011 with the last PKC tournament
of the 2010 / 2011 season. The Fort Rapids Karate Championship will
be held Friday and Saturday June 24 / 25, 2011 at the Fort Rapids water
park and resort in Columbus, Ohio. This two day single point tournament
is the last one in Region #3 and the last one for National points that
is in close proximity. Although there are still two more tournaments
available they are located in Kokomo, IN and Chicago, IL. Championships
titles are still a challenge and don't get caught short on points. When
you think you have it all tied up it can be snatched out from under
you. Be careful and track your points as well as the competitors right
behind you. Watch the National points standings and make sure you are
safe. The PKC National KARATE championships and Awards Banquet will
be held Labor Day weekend September 2011. This awesome event is held
at the Marriott convention center, Indianapolis, IN.

The co-op has enabled region 3 & 4 competitors to expand their horizons and rack up points to capture their perspective divisions. The under Black belt senior divisions have grown in the past several years. These divisions are bigger and more competitive than the 18 - 34 divisions. Many good Martial Artists are upcoming and preparing for the Black Belt divisions. Look out Black Belts there is always someone out there to take your place in the ratings.
